Our Retired Racehorse Project begins with ex-racers who must be sound enough for re-training.  We utilize back to basics ground work, completely re-starting the horse at the level appropriate to their individual needs.  Our trainer has over 30 years experience with starting young horses, as well as racehorses in training at the track. A former exercise rider and licensed CHRB Assistant Trainer, Julie is familiar with racehorse conditioning and training. Every horse is evaluated for their knowledge and disposition, and re-trained accordingly.  

This could mean 60 days for sound, mature minded horses, to 6 months or more.  Julie states “making good horses is what I do, and have been doing for the last 30 years.  Finding each horse the right human match is very important – the horse deserves the best possible home – and the human deserves the best possible horse for them”.

One of the best things about our RRP is our partnership with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (http://www.trfinc.org) , which began in 2012.  The TRF gave us the ability to foster horses for our former project, Second Chances California. 

Healing Arenas has been able to assist with the TRF’s mission by utilizing some of the horses for equine assisted psychotherapy, and re-training adoptable horses shipped to our satellite facility from their locations throughout the US.  What a fantastic partnership we have with the TRF, and we are looking forward to many more years of the same!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who have adopted from us, or through our connections at Golden Gate Fields and other wonderful organizations.  Thus far, we’ve adopted (or assisted in the adoption) of 29 horses since incorporation in February 2104.
